Children and Soccer Accidents – Prevention Tips

Those that play soccer know that soccer accidents are common; this is a sport that requires a lot of strenuous physical activity so there are times where an accident may occur. There is no doubt that soccer is a great sport to participate in, especially for children. It provides a way that they can learn to work as a team, plus it is great for exercise.

The problem is that soccer accidents and injuries can occur if children are not properly prepared for the game, or if they are not supervised during practice as well as games. Although not especially common, one of the most dangerous types of soccer accidents is when the goal is not properly anchored in the ground. Soccer goals falling on players have caused serious injury and even death. Before allowing your children to play soccer on a soccer field, you will want to find out if the goals are secured in the ground properly so they cannot tip and injury someone.

Aside from goals tipping, one of the most common areas of the body to suffer from injury due to soccer accidents is the knee. Injuries of the knee can happen if the child moves quickly from one direction to another. If your child should injury their knee while playing soccer it is important to seek medical attention; this type of accident can be serious and may even require many weeks of rehabilitation.

Some additional injuries related to playing this game or soccer accidents include heat related injuries, sprains, fractures, as well as injuries to the tendons. Although it is true that these types of injuries are common in soccer, they do not occur at the same rate that you see with other types of sports games, such as football. 

One type of injury you will see with soccer accidents is ankle injuries. When the ankle is injured while playing soccer it may not seem to be too bad at first, but this type of injury can get worse with time. For this reason if your child should injure their ankle you should assume that it is a severe injury and seek medical attention as soon as possible. The sooner your child is treated for the injury the less likelihood there is for long term damage.

Another common injury associated with soccer accidents includes injury to the head or face; in fact, these types of injuries account for nearly 22% of soccer injuries. Your child can receive this type of injury if they collide with the goal, or hit the ball with their head of face.

One way that you can prevent soccer accidents that lead to injury is to ensure that your child is taking the time to warm up before and after they play. This will help to stretch out the muscles so they will be less prone to injury. It will also help to avoid injuries if your child is wearing the right type of shoes and protective equipment.

First aid for soccer accidents is usually the job of the coach; they will apply icepacks and have the child rest until they can be taken to a doctor for medical treatment.

Some things to keep in mind concerning soccer accidents is that children are more likely to be injured if they are between the ages of 7 and 12. This is due to the fact that these are the years that they are growing the most and the muscles are more flexible to allow for bone growth. Of course this shouldn’t prevent the child from participating in sports, but be you will want them to take extra precautions.
