The Importance of Knowing Soccer Goal Dimensions

A sport that many children become involved in at an early age is soccer; goal dimensions are important features of the game because, naturally, it is through the goals as well as the strategy in obtaining them that the game is won.

History of soccer

The game of soccer has roots going back thousands of years, although it was not known by that name.  The mid 1800’s saw the formulation of the regulation play known today when the very first “football” association was formed in England between two organizations, rugby and football.  Great debate and controversy surrounded the finalization of the rules for the game, and the end result was a split between the two organizations. From that point, the game of soccer, or football as it was then known, began on its rise to fame and popularity.  It is played worldwide, with the United States being one of the last to catch on to this sport craze.  Now the sport is firmly ensconced here, with youth camps and programs providing instruction in the game to young people and their parents becoming familiar with it as well through watching their kids.

Playing the game

Skill and strategy are key components to the play of this game.  The main objective of soccer is to score points by getting a round white and black marked ball into the other team’s goal.  This objective is made much more difficult in that players are not allowed to touch the ball with their arms or hands.  Instead, the feet play an important role as the primary means of traversing the ball across the field, with the rest of the body also employed in strategic moves toward the opposite goal while guarding it from the opposing team at the same time.  Eleven players on each team occupy the field, with several players on the same team often instrumental in getting the ball to the goal.

The goal zone

Points are called goals, and are made by getting the ball into a fenced area.  This sounds an easy enough objective; however, it is common for most games to end with low scores.  The goal consists of two vertical poles that are joined by a horizontal crossbar and are often encased in netting to present a barrier for the ball.  In soccer, goal dimensions are consistent; the distance between the two upright poles is 8 feet, and another 8 feet is between the horizontal crossbar and the ground. The width of the goal can vary depending on the level of play, but range between 21 and 24 feet.  The goal zone extends outward by another 6 yards into the playing field.  Players and the goalkeeper protecting their zone will use this entire area to their advantage.  Due to the large area available, the keeper must be able to anticipate where to place his body in order to deflect the ball and prevent the other team from scoring.  This is often accomplished by positioning oneself in what is called the “penalty area”; a line in front of the actual goal.  Penalty kicks present another situation where knowing the soccer goal dimensions is important. The kick is taken 12 yards out from the goal line, with the kick taker, the keeper and the referee staying within an 18 yard block while all other players must remain outside until the ball is kicked.

In a game that is as free flowing and fast paced as soccer, it can be confusing to keep all of the dimensions in check.  The referee is invaluable in monitoring play to ensure that the “Laws of the Game” are being kept.

Increased popularity of this game among children and their parents has brought greater understanding of the Laws and the importance of soccer goal dimensions during play.
